The effect of the ionosphere on the detectability, polarization, structure, and decay of a hydromagnetic surface wave is examined. It is suggested that the problem should be reassessed because of studies of global magnetospheric modes as a source of large-scale geomagnetic pulsations. A simple model is used to illustrate the difficulties in studying this problem. It is concluded that signals in the vicinity of field-line resonanace will be strongly coupled to the local ionosphere, whereas those far away from field-line resonance will not be coupled.
