Recently it has been claimed that, in the space surrounding a black hole, a two-dimensional quantum stress-energy tensor can be regarded as an approximate four-dimensional tensor via the 'geometrical optics approximation' (Balbinot, 1986; Balbinot and Barletta, 1988; and Shizume and Takagi, 1987). This claim seems to be false and results from a misunderstanding of the nature of the approximation.
