The ultraviolet spectrum of the 1973F Comet Kohoutek was the subject of calculations on spectral bands of CO and NO molecules under conditions thought to prevail in the coma of a comet. The degree of occupation of the excited states was determined by solving an extensive systems of equations in which problems arose because of the omission of the higher excited levels. It is shown that by making a suitable choice of normalization conditions, the resulting error can be kept very small.
