It has been assumed in a number of studies that a nova shell is fully ionized during the decline. A description is presented of an investigation which attempts to show that the shell of V1500 Cyg is not fully ionized, but rather forms a Stromgren shell. In this case the optical light curve is determined by the decline of the energy production rate of the central object. Following the work of Pottasch (1959), it is proposed that the shell is radiation-bound, that is, that the volume of the emitting region is determined by the balance between photoionization and recombinations.
