Determination of a suitable reflective coating for ultraviolet detectors is discussed, with particular reference to a detection system incorporated in the D-2B astronomical satellite. Specifications and construction details are given for the detector. Reflectance characteristics of various materials, including aluminum, silver, iridium, molybdenum, gold, rhenium, tantalum, and tungsten are surveyed; the difficulties in stabilizing some of the metals for long-term use are also mentioned. The survey indicated that aluminum, treated with MgF2 to prevent oxidation, was most suitable; in practice, its efficacy was confirmed, especially in the vicinity of the 800 A wavelength.
