Data on crochet-type disturbances obtained along meridional chains of high-latitude stations are used to study fine structure in the meridional distribution of auroral electric fields. The source of electrojet-region electric fields is considered along with interactions between electric fields of ionospheric and magnetospheric origin. The electric-field generation mechanism in the electrojet region in the evening and morning sectors is also investigated. Based on analysis of crochet profiles, it is concluded that ionospheric dynamo action in the morning and afternoon sectors may substantially inhibit magnetospheric convection in force tubes associated with the region of enhanced ionospheric conductivity.
