Leighton's model (1969) of a solar cycle with a hypothetical quasi-stationary internal magnetic field of the sun taken into account, is used to explain the long-term variations of solar activity, including prolonged periods of abnormally low and/or high activity. The model is modified in such a way as to agree with the experimental data. It is shown that there exists a close relation between the values of the radial component of the solar magnetic field and the values of the toroidal magnetic field intensity in the course of an 11-yr cycle, thus making it possible to predict the value of the toroidal field intensity (and, hence, the level of solar activity) 2-3 years ahead.
