We investigate the stability of de Sitter space with respect to both free particle production and exponential particle production due to a self-interacting scalar field. We find de Sitter space to be stable in the presence of free field particle production, but probably inconsistent in the presence of exponential particle production. However, models of the universe which expand like de Sitter space for some period (including inflationary cosmologies) are unaffected.
