The tidal movement of the ocean across the geomagnetic field generates electric currents by dynamo action. The magnetic field associated with these currents forms a significant proportion of the variation with a period of half a lunar day that can be detected in geomagnetic data. Practical methods for separating this ocean effect from the other contributions to the geomagnetic tide are discussed, and the use of these data for improving theoretical models of the mechanism is outlined.
