The commencement of the intensity increase of relativistic protons in the flare of May 7, 1978 is examined on the basis of neutron-counter data. It is shown that the emission of particles from the sun roughly coincided (the difference being a few minutes) with the moment of generation of X-rays. This indicates that protons with energies up to 5-10 GeV and electrons were generated simultaneously in this event.
