A formulation is given for the eigenvalue problem describing internal oscillations in the earth's fluid core. The description is appropriate for either the Boussinesq or the subseismic approximation to the full system of governing equations for a rotating, compressible, inhomogeneous, self-gravitating thick shell of fluid. A particular choice for the buoyancy frequency for a spherical earth is examined that varies from stable stratification at the core-mantle boundary to weak unstable stratification at the core-mantle boundary to weak unstable stratification at the inner core boundary. It is suggested how the constraints by which the waves are trapped according to frequency may be used to estimate both at the maximum value of the buoyancy frequency in the fluid core and the thickness of the region of stable stratification.
