Observations of the planetary boundary layer under conditions with strong or moderate winds often show the large-scale boundary-layer motions to be highly elongated in a direction close to that of the geostrophic wind. The properties of such large-scale motions are examined by means of a two-dimensional numerical model. The small-scale turbulence is parameterized using a buoyancy-dependent mixing-length hypothesis. The objective is to understand how the properties and dynamics of such rolls depend upon the relative importance of shear and buoyancy forces.
