Some considerations on the origin of the photosynthetic pigment apparatus in the period of transition of organisms from heterotrophic to phototrophic mode of life and further evolution of this apparatus are given in this paper. Some ideas about interrelation between ‘major’ and ‘auxiliary’ pigments and about different forms of the pigments in vivo are discussed from an evolutionary point of view.
