An estimate of the interstellar cloud cover as a function of distance is obtained. Detailed observations of local diffuse clouds in samples of the sky over all galactic latitudes and covering in total approximately 5 percent of the celestial sphere are employed to obtain the estimate. This estimate may be used to determine the spatial frequency of clouds observed in the distance interval from 50 to 150 pc. Two different sky coverage functions are evaluated. As an application of one of the sky coverage functions, the difference between the predictions of the local radiation field based on the assumption of an omnipresent smoothly varying distribution and an estimate based on the patchy distribution is examined. It is shown that the change from a continuous dust distribution to a spotty one results in a lowering of the effective absorption per unit length.
