Intergalactic shock waves in a low density universe are considered in cases where the energy losses from the shocks are insignificant at redhsifts of z between 2-3, such as observed in quasars. It is shown that, when the metagalactic gas has a density of up to 0.1-0.2 of 10 to the -29th g/cu cm, Lyman-alpha radiation will be observable at the outermost and densest part of shock waves. The absorption lines occur in the form of observable doublets of electron and neutral hydrogen concentrations. An estimate for the equivalent width of the components entering the Lyman-alpha doublet is calculated, together with the expected distance between the two lines. Comparisons are made with observational data to show that the Lyman-alpha lines detected in certain quasars can actually belong to intervening absorbers. More observations of distant quasars are recommended for obtaining confirmation, and thus having a tool for studying the evolution and physical properties of intergalactic gas.
