In the present investigation, both pitch angle and energy distributions of auroral electrons are obtained, for the first time, by rigorous numerical solutions of a multiangle transport equation at all energies in a realistic three component atmosphere in the presence of a conjugate field-aligned electrostatic potential. The results confirm all previous demonstrations of the validity of Evan's (1974, 1975, 1976) hypothesis concerning the origin of low energy auroral electrons from collisional interactions of the auroral primaries with the atmosphere. The existence of a collisionally populated field-perpendicular flux at energies near the beam energy is also demonstrated.
