By formulating scalar-tensor theories with varying gravitational constant or with varying particle masses in a conformally invariant way, a method is developed to generate exact solutions whenever the trace of the energy-momentum tensor vanishes. This method is applied to the radiation era of a Robertson-Walker universe, and it is shown that scalar-tensor theories with positive definite arbitrary coupling functions are initially scalar dominated. Exact solutions are presented which make this explicit for the case of Schwinger's scalar-tensor theory, thus confirming Schwinger's earlier results. At the end of the radiation era, scalar-tensor theories seem to become indistinguishable from general relativity.
