Possible plasma wave instabilities arising from free energy in auroral ion distributions are investigated using data of the energetic ion velocity space distribution observed by the S3-3 satellite on 18 July 1976. It is suggested that the downflowing ion beams might also be subject to beam instabilities similar to those of upflowing accelerated ion beams. The downflowing ion beams, under the influence of the defocusing magnetic mirror force, are also found to form rings of energetic ions, which have regions of positive perpendicular velocity gradients, making them potentially unstable to flute mode instabilities. However, upflowing ion conics are found not to have peaked energy spectra and they are not well represented by ion ring models.
