The New Technology Telescope (NTT) is a European Southern Observatory (ESO) conceptual design program which has been in operation since 1980 and is expected to yield a working telescope, by 1987, which will offer a number of important insights into the design problems of the prospective Very Large Telescope. The NTT's primary mirror will have 40 percent of the weight of the ESO's conventional 3.6 m telescope primary and a highly compact and symmetrical altazimuth mounting will be used. Most importantly, closed loop active primary mirror optics will be used to optimize image quality. The building that will house the NTT is also very compact and dispenses with the conventional dome.
