An attempt is made to examine theoretically the influence of the molecular O2+ and NO+ ions on the structure of the F-layer. In this respect three questions arise: to what extent do the molecular ions contribute to the variations of the F2-layer; what is the dependence of this contribution on solar activity, time of day, and season; and when and at what heights are transport processes important for the ion distribution. The F-layer is described by four parameters: the electron density in the F2- and F1-layer maximum, the peak height of the F2-layer, and the semithickness of a parabolic approximation to the F2 peak. The theoretical basis for the calculations is presented briefly, and the results of the calculations given, discussed, and compared with observed values.
