Radioactive beam experiments play an important role in the quest for an understanding of the origin of the heavy elements in nature produced by the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process (r-process). I discuss recent progress in identifying the site and nature of the r-process and the reasons why nuclear physics experiments at existing and future radioactive beam facilities are needed to solve the r-process problem. Recent results and future plans for r-process related experiments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory are also presented.
