Advances which have been made in studies of the earth's magnetosphere on the basis of satellite observations and sophisticated ground-based measurements are reviewed. Particular attention is given to distributions and interactions of waves and plasmas in the magnetosphere, the physics of wave/energetic-particle interactions, the magnetic field-aligned currents, and auroral phenomena. The major plasma domains with the magnetosphere (the plasma mantle, plasma sheet, plasmasphere, ionosphere, and the Van Allen belts) are discussed and illustrated, along with the dynamo resulting from the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere. A photomosaic of the auroral oval obtained from a satellite during an intense substorm is presented and discussed.
