The paper describes a graphical method, called 'asymptote analysis', by which spatial resolution, coverage, and spectral resolution requirements of a large optical system (in this case, the Large Earth Survey Telescope of the SEOS satellite) can be converted into such first order telescope parameters as aperture diameter and f/number. The method permits visualization of critical parameter effects and leads to optimizing equations which can be exercized with a slide rule or pocket calculator. A simple set of telescope specifications was found by which most mission objectives of the LEST could be met.
