The detection of potassium in the extensive cloud of sodium and hydrogen surrounding Io is reported. It is shown that potassium emission features observed in spectra of Io are associated with that satellite, that these features lie in an extensive cloud about it, and that only elements with unit valence have been detected in that cloud. Two interpretations of the last phenomenon are discussed: the possibility that Io's surface is enriched in the observed elements and the possibility that the surface microstructure may be rough enough for multiple scattering of sputtered sodium and potassium to occur.
