The proton electromagnetic cyclotron instability is investigated theoretically with cold ions added to a warm anisotropic homogeneous proton plasma simulating the magnetosphere. The effect of singly ionized lithium as seeding element on the proton EM cyclotron instability is given special attention, with the low mass and the small specific charge of Li noted. Enhancement of the instability via injection of warm protons, cold protons, or cold ions is studied, with both analytical and numerical calculations.
