The analysis of ionogram records can give appreciable errors at night, when large amounts of ionization may be present with plasma frequencies less than the minimum recorded frequency. The errors depend on both the total amount of low-density ionization, and on the ionization gradient near minimum frequency. A simple, approximate allowance for both effects is obtained by using the virtual height of an extraordinary ray which reflects at a plasma frequency near minimum frequency. The frequency difference and the correction factor are calculated for a range of dip angles, and analytic approximations are given for use in computer programs.
