The article discusses long-term variations in auroral displays and solar activity and attempts to extrapolate variations in auroral displays back into time, on the basis of paleomagnetism and paleoinclination data. The physics and structure of the magnetosphere and plasmasphere are reviewed, and the paleomagnetosphere is discussed. Instances of auroral displays observed in temperate and tropic zones (as recorded in historical data) are discussed, including ancient Chinese, Greek, and Near Eastern references. Cyclic variations in geomagnetic field dipole strengths, field reversals, and appearances of nondipolar geomagnetic fields are dealt with. Reflections of auroral displays in the mythologies of contemporary Arctic and sub-Arctic peoples are examined for possible correlation with the graphic art of paleolithic peoples who may have responded similarly to auroral displays.
