A polycrystalline specimen of clinopyroxene diopside has been shot-pressed at P = 15 kbar and T = 850°C in a piston-cylinder apparatus. Compressional (νP) and shear (νS) velocities are determined as a function of pressure to 7.5 kbar at room temperature by an ultrasonic pulse transmission technique. The velocities at 7.5 kbar are νP = 8.06 km/sec and νS = 4.77 km/sec. These data are consistent with velocity-density trends for orthopyroxenes due to the compensating effects of the monoclinic structure (positive) and Ca content (negative). With the addition of the new data for diopside, it is possible to calculate directly the velocities of various upper-mantle mineral assemblages.
