Measurements of the total electron content of the ionosphere and plasmasphere are discussed which were made by the Faraday polarization-rotation and dispersive-group-delay techniques using VHF and UHF beacon signals from the satellite ATS 6. The total electron content of the plasmasphere was determined by subtracting the ionospheric content obtained with the Faraday rotation measurements from the overall content measured by the second technique. It is found that during the two storms, rapid increases in both the total and plasmaspheric contents occurred after sudden commencements; the increases were followed by long periods of low values for the two contents. The increases in plasmaspheric content following sudden commencements are shown to confirm the theory that increases in the total electron content during a positive storm phase are caused, at least in part, by lifting of the F layer to regions of reduced recombination. The results also suggest that heating effects of the neutral atmosphere were responsible for the depletions of the ionospheric content during negative phases and that the plasmaspheric depletions were due to downward fluxes of electrons seeking to maintain hydrostatic equilibrium in the topside ionosphere.
