This paper gives a short survey of equatorial spread-F irregularities as observed by means of transequatorial radio propagation. The macro-structure of the equatorial spread-F appropriately is described by a breaking wave field. An explanation of these observations is given by a spatial resonance mechanism, amplifying travelling ionospheric disturbances so that the mechanism transits into a non-linear regime. In this state, electron density irregularities are generated which indicate a quasi-periodical structure. This resonance effect, generating large-scale equatorial spread-F irregularities, is comparable to the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability.
