In the period 22 May-8 August 1974, the diurnal variation of ionospheric absorption was measured on board ship at 1.73 MHz, 2.28 MHz and 5.06 MHz on a voyage from Hamburg to Punta Arenas via the Atlantic Ocean, and back to Hamburg via the Pacific Ocean, Panama Canal and North Atlantic Ocean. As a preliminary result, the behavior of absorption at a constant solar zenith angle as a function of geographic latitude is presented and discussed with particular regard to the winter anomaly.
