A positive-ion model for the daytime D-region is used to examine the formation of water cluster ions when NO(+) is the major ion produced by photoionization. Particular attention is paid to the role of NO(+).CO2 and NO(+).N2 in the NO(+) hydration processes and to the importance of collisional dissociation of these ions. It is found that with rate coefficients for these dissociation processes based on laboratory measurements, the computed results are not consistent with measurements of ion composition and electron concentrations.
