The design of a receiving station having a 10 to 30 m diameter optical collection area for detecting extraterrestrial laser signals is discussed. Attention is given to the use of pulses for communication, receiver electronics to support nanosecond pulses, data handling, and detector technology including photomultipliers and avalanche photodiodes.
