For the edge-on configuration of Saturn in 1979-80, a new focal instrument based on the principle of the coronograph was designed to search for a new Saturn ring. The instrument eliminates all extraneous light and at the same time reduces stellar light, and was adapted to the Meudon and Pic-du-Midi telescopes. A new ring was detected on Nov. 1, 1979 up to 3.9 radii from Saturn's center, on Jan. 29, 1980 to about 7 radii from the center, and on several nights since. The new ring lies outside the Roche limit, and encompasses the orbits of the satellites Janus, Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys and Dione.
