It is shown that the latitude of the polar wall of the main ionospheric trough (MIT) can be used as an index of the geomagnetic-activity level. This conclusion is based on the experimentally established facts that the latitude of the polar wall of the MIT coincides with the position of the equatorial boundary of the zone of diffuse precipitation of low-energy electrons and with the projection of the plasmapause onto the ionospheric heights, i.e., with the boundary of plasma convection under the effect of a large-scale magnetospheric electric field. This index has some inertia, on the average, can be measured from Earth and from satellites, and has a clear physical meaning. This makes it possible to use its current value directly.
