Spherically symmetric models of the solar transition region and corona have been computed on the basis of the equations of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. Heating is supposed to be caused by the periodic passage of shock waves, thermal conduction, and cooling by radiative losses from the plasma. Comparison is made with observations, and the agreement, particularly with the results of extreme-ultraviolet line observations, is found to be unsatisfactory.
