It is shown in the context of the de Sitter space that the tunneling of the Hartle-Hawking wave functions creates thermal effects characterized by a temperature which is twice the Gibbons-Hawking (GH) value. This temperature rapidly settles down to a GH temperature evaluated with a self-consistently determined cosmological constant. The resulting isothermal expansion, which can be attributed to the trace anomaly, an asymptotic remnant of the tunneling, prevents a phase transition from a disordered to an ordered phase; thereby precluding the phase transition mechanism of inflation.
