A recent determination of the coordinates of 972 points on the lunar surface has been made by A.C.I.C. (Meyer & Ruffin, 1965) and lunar plate measurements and selenodetic coordinates of supplementary control features (A.C.I.C. publication, October 1966). A new determination of the Moon's external shape can now be made. It is shown that the maria and uplands lie on ellipsoidal surfaces with their long axes directed to the Earth but the maria are systematically lower than the uplands. The ellipticities of the surfaces agree but are three times the dynamical ellipticity. It is concluded that the Moon's marked departure from hydrostatic equilibrium is best explained by postulating convection.
