The object 2060 Chiron, a large distant comet, has been studied to determine the character of its activity at distances as great as 13 AU from the sun. Photometric data obtained for 1989-1992 show Chiron to be capable of short, steep brightening trends, as well as long-term outbursts; the coma is optically thin, and gradually dilutes light scattered from the nucleus as long as the coma grows in strength. Outbursts and variable surface brightness seem to be common characteristics of active distant comets.
