A new canonical formalism of the Einstein theory is presented. It has a
structure similar to Ashtekar's polynomial formalism. Moreover it
contains only real variables and is applicable to any spacetime
dimension. A close relation to the work on 2+1 gravity by Witten is also
pointed out.
