A Monte Carlo study of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory's small-scale prototype detector experiment is presented. This detector, called the Small Test Detector, consists of a cylindrical water-filled tank with 43 photomultiplier tubes arranged in a cylindrical array facing the center of the tank. Electrons are fired into the center of the tank at energies in the 2-11 MeV range and the responses of the photomultipliers are recorded for single electron events. The Monte Carlo simulation breaks down the electron's trajectory into small steps or cells; photons are simulated in a similar way to electrons. The modelling of the electromagnetic interactions that occur as a result of electrons entering the water (multiple scattering, bremsstrahlung, ionization energy loss, Cerenkov radiation, Compton scattering, and pair production by photons) is described. The simulated photoelectron yield as a function of incident electron energy, and the angular distributions of photomultiplier tube response for 3.0, 6.5, and 11.0 MeV electrons show excellent agreement with the experimental results.
