An attempt has been made to convey a picture of the current state of research in dwarf novae and nova-like stars. The author summarizes the observational appearance of these stars. The aim was to present the data independent of any interpretation, while at the same time to point out implications these observations have for any model. The Roche model for cataclysmic variables and the main streams of current theoretical work in dwarf novae and nova-like stars were presented.
