Radio Spectrographs: Data Processing, Radio Spectrographs: Solar Radio Radiation

Scientific paper

IPS Radio and Space Services (IFS) commissioned a new radiospectrograph in May 1992. Located at Culgoora, near Narrabri, in northwest NSW, it replaces a radiospectrograph constructed by the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics in 1966. In conducting this upgrade, IPS has made use of commercially available hardware to replace all of the original instrument except its antennae. An important aspect of the new instrument is the acquisition of data in digital form. This, together with software written by IPS staff, permits a variety of data analysis techniques that were not previously possible. The paper demonstrates the capabilities of the new instrument by presenting some of the radiospectrograms obtained during the past twelve months. Each is accompanied by a short discussion of its salient features. Some of the advanced functions of the digital display software, such as automated shock speed estimation, are also outlined.
