The radiation belt transport equation for a general ion species is studied with emphasis on the ionic charge state distribution under steady state equilibrium conditions. An equation for the charge state summed ion distribution of an elemental species is derived, and equations for the normalized ionic charge state distribution are developed. The special limit of pure charge state relaxation distribution is considered both for the general situation of any ion species, and for the more easily analyzed cases of helium and lithium ions. A fairly general algorithm is developed to compute the steady state equilibrium ionic charge state distribution, and analytic solutions are also obtained in special cases. When the relative charge state distribution is so determined, the total charge state summed ion distribution function (and thereby the trapped fluxes) of an elemental ion species can be determined by solving a single transport equation. This significantly simplifies the theoretical determination of radiation belt ion fluxes for the heavier ion species. A few exemplifying cases are computed and briefly discussed for helium ions with two positive charge states. While earlier methods to solve charge state coupled radiation belt transport equations required the use of a mainframe computer, the present numerical algorithms are implementable on a minicomputer.
