The γ-ray spectrometer on board the Solar Maximum Mission detected a large number of solar flares with γ-ray emission in the 10-100 MeV range. A smaller number of these events displayed evidence of a hardening of the photon spectrum around 70 MeV indicating the presence of neutral pion decay γ-rays. We consider thick-target calculations of the interaction of accelerated protons with the ambient solar atmosphere to address the production of this pion decay radiation.
