The formation of the vertical structure of plasma concentration inhomogeneities in the ionospheric F region is examined on the basis of an analysis of the model problem of perturbation propagation downward of a specified horizontal level. It is shown that electron concentration inhomogeneities that are moderately extended in the vertical direction are formed under the effect of longitudinal (vertical) diffusion and transverse drift of the plasma.
