The variation of the geomagnetic activity index around the interplanetary magnetic field sector boundary has been analyzed for three solar cycles, 1947-1954, 1955-1964 and 1965-1975. The data were divided into vernal and autumnal equinoxes, and the variation around the Hale and non-Hale boundaries was determined. The geomagnetic activity at the interplanetary magnetic field sector boundary crossing was found to be influenced by a variety of factors, including the type of boundary, the season, solar wind parameters, Rozenberg-Coleman effects and geomagnetic dipole orientation. The geomagnetic activity index displays a sharp modulation at the Hale boundary and a sharp minimum prior to the non-Hale boundary, possibly due to the enhancement of the photospheric magnetic field intensity at the Hale sector boundary.
