Detailed observations made by the STARE (Scandinavian twin auroral radar experiment) system of the ionospheric electric fields associated with Pc 5 geomagnetic pulsations are reported. The STARE facility, which consists of two pulsed bistatic radars located in Norway and Finland, was used to measure simultaneously the intensity and mean Doppler velocity of radar auroral irregularities in order to obtain E region electron drift velocities and ionospheric electric fields at a spatial resolution of 20 km and a temporal resolution of 20 sec. The type of Pc 5 pulsation studied is concluded to be a hydromagnetic field line resonance, while the underprediction of the D component observed together with accurate H and Z component determinations indicates that the ionosphere rotates the magnetic field of the wave by 90 deg. Earlier observations are interpreted in terms of the electric field of the wave near the resonance latitude and equatorial ion densities for L between 5 and 8 are estimated from STARE pulsation data.
