If a giant detector array is used to observe showers above 1 EeV,
measurements of the air scintillation light and its ratio to Cerenkov
light might usefully indicate the depth of shower development. The
proportion of muons remains a useful indicator of primary mass: their
height of origin appears to be a less sensitive indicator of mass.
