This review describes measurements of Čerenkov radiation in cosmic ray showers initiated by primaries in the energy range 1015-1018 eV. Most of the observations described were made between 1975 and 1980 by the Durham group and are summarized here to provide estimates for use in the design of future large air shower detecting arrays.
